As the weather gets warmer and the hockey season comes to a close, the High Plains Hockey League reminds us that we're not just through yet. While spring descends upon the rocky mountains, the HPHL was getting into full swing with Rock Canyon (3-2) taking on Cherry Creek (3-0) in some Varsity Tier I action at Family Sports on Saturday.
Cherry Creek was able to jump out to an early lead with Luke Stevens scoring first on a two on one breakaway goal, followed by Jacob Harding (1G, 1A) also lighting the lamp to give Creek a 2-0 lead going into the second period.
Rock Canyon would get on the board and cut the lead in half to start the second with a goal from leading scorer Rylin Quintana (1G, 1A) to make it 2-1. Cherry Creek would answer right back less than a minute later with two straight goals by Joe Whitmore (1G, 1A) and Jonathan Didas to extend their lead to 4-1.
Rock Canyon's Jacob Buras would close the gap to 4-2 with a goal in the last minute of the second period, but that would be as close as they would come as the third period would yield no scoring and Cherry Creek would pull out the two goal victory. Both goaltenders played well, with Rock Canyon's Bryan Warnecke making 40 saves in a losing effort and Cherry Creek's Lucas Banks collecting 19 saves and the win.
Rock Canyon's #17 Jacob Buras in able to beat the goalie to the near post for a goal and to close the gap to 4-2.
