#5 Jack Steffer on the celly after his goal brings Ralston within one at 2-1.
The #5 Ralston Valley Mustangs (10-6-1) traveled down south to Family Sports on Saturday night in an attempt to not only put a damper on Senior Night for #1 Regis Jesuit (15-0-0), but to also try to put an end to the defending champion's perfect season.
The Mustangs have had some ups and downs this season and are searching for some consistency heading into the Colorado state hockey playoffs, and nothing would help more than a win over the top ranked and undefeated Raiders. Regis has answered the bell several times when tested this season, including having to comeback on Ralston Valley, who dominated the first two periods of their first meeting before two third period goals won it for the Raiders.
Some excellent spacing and sharing of the puck resulted in Anders Erickson getting the scoring started with a goal on the power play for Regis Jesuit just about midway through the first period to give the champs an early 1-0 lead.
#12 Anders Erickson scores the first goal of the game on the power play to give Regis a 1-0 lead in the first.
The two teams would trade goals in the second period, with the Raiders' Wyatt Verity putting them up 2-0 on a blistering shot just over six and a half minutes into the period. Ralston Valley Senior Jack Steffer would answer back on an unassisted power play snipe to bring the Mustangs back to within a goal at 2-1 going into the final period.
Ralston Valley's #5 Jack Steffer brings the Mustangs within 2-1 on his power play goal.
The final period would yield little in the way of scoring, as neither team could muster up much offense until the Raiders' Kale Lone (1G, 1A) got free of Ralston Valley defenders and was able to bury an empty net goal with just a second remaining to give Regis the 3-1 win. Senior goaltender Alec Martinez (20 SV, 1.00 GAA, .952 SV%) was able to limit the damage to help lead the Raiders to victory and keep their undefeated season intact.
Regis Senior goaltender #33 Alec Martinez had 20 saves in his win against Ralston Valley on Senior Day.
