The Air Academy Kadets (3-11-0) welcomed the Kent Denver Sun Devils (8-6-1) down to Sertich Ice Center in Colorado Springs for a matchup of Pinnacle Conference foes that contained some rare accomplishments.
The Sun Devils got off to a fast start by scoring the first three goals of the game to give them a 3-0 lead after the first period. That's where things started to get a little interesting. After scoring once already in the first, Kent's Christian Stevens (3G) got his second goal to get things started in the second.
#23 Spencer Thomas scores the first goal of the game for Kent Denver in the first period to give them a 1-0 lead.
Air Academy's Gavin Gray would close the gap to 4-1 just three minutes later to put the Kadets on the board. Unfortunately for Academy, that would be all that they would get as the momentum would oddly change back to Kent Denver on a Kadet's power play. That's when Colorado high school hockey's leading goal scorer George Kandel (3G, 2A) decided to take over, netting an unassisted, short handed goal to extend the lead to 5-1.
To make matters worse for Air Academy, the Sun Devils weren't finished with that man-disadvantage. Just over a minute later, Christian Stevens finished off his hat trick with a second short handed score to give Kent a 6-1 lead going into the final period.
The third period would belong to George Kandel and the Kent Denver Sun Devils, as Kandel would score the last two goals of the game to net himself a hat trick and give Kent a 8-1 win in a game that saw two short handed goals on the same power play and two players record hat tricks.
