For those of you who have yet to see the Fort Collins Lambkins (10-0-0) play in their first year of CHSAA Colorado high school hockey, let me be one of the first to tell you that this team is no joke. Just ask the Ralston Valley Mustangs (5-2-0), who found out the hard way on Friday afternoon after suffering a 5-2 defeat at the hands of the Lamkins.
The Mustangs did not go down without a fight though, as Michael Atwood would put them on the board first to give Ralston Valley a 1-0 lead in the first. That lead would be short lived, however, as Brenden Meyer would light the lamp for Fort Collins just 1:33 later to knot the game up at 1-1 after one.
Meyer was not done there, continuing his spectacular play this season with an unbelievable, between the legs goal in front of the Ralston Valley net to start the second period. That score gave the Lambkins a 2-1 lead and made Meyer the leading goal scorer in CHSAA this season with 13.
"He's one of those kids that when he gets a chance to put the puck in the net, he does" Fort Collins Head Coach Rhett Gordon said of Meyer. "He's got great hand to eye coordination, he's a big body so he can protect the puck well and he's one of those kids that you want to see succeed. He's great in the locker room, very easy to coach, so to see him have the season that he is it's obviously satisfying for me."
CHSAA's co-point leader #6 Greg Bilek scores his second goal of the game for Fort Collins to put them up 4-2.
Matthew Trubacz (1G, 1A) would tie the game back up at 2-2 on a goal 55 seconds later to give the Mustangs a lift, but Loveland's Greg Bilek scored on a nifty redirection tip in front of the Ralston Valley net to give the Lambkins the lead back for good at 3-2 midway through the second.
The third period would be all Fort Collins, with Bilek netting his second score of the game to give him the co-lead for points in CHSAA high school hockey at 22 (9G, 13A). Goaltender Billy Martin made 23 saves, including a crucial point blank breakaway stop on Ralston Valley's leading goal scorer Jack Steffer, and teammate Ethan Nelson would add an empty netter at the end to give the #2 Lambkins a 5-2 victory over #5 Ralston Valley.
"We're not looking too far ahead, our main goal is to get into the state tournament and see where we can go from there" said Coach Gordon when asked what his team's focus should be for the rest of the season. "We're gonna throw our hat in the ring and see what happens and see what happens, our kids have a little bit of grit to them and hopefully it continues to work."
This trio of #19 Brenden Meyer (left), #6 Greg Bilek (center), and #7 Drew Cronin (right) have been superb this season for Fort Collins.
