Teams line up for the National Anthem before the Championship of the 2016 Quebec Qualifier

The only two unbeaten teams remaining in the 2016 Quebec Qualifier met at the Pepsi Center on Monday night to determine who would represent the Colorado Avalanche in the Quebec International Tournament in February of 2017.  The Foothills Flyers (4-0-1) and the Littleton Hawks (4-0-1) faced off in an epic battle of Colorado's top PeeWee AA teams, and they did not disappoint.

The first period was rather non eventful, as both teams tried to gather a feel for the game and its opponent.  Foothills found itself in the penalty box most of the first, including being two men down at one point, but Littleton could not capitalize on the opportunities given to them and we went into the second period scoreless.

Tables would turn in the second, as it was the Hawks who would spend most of the period in the penalty box. The Flyers would strike first about mid way through the second period on a goal from the Captain Connection.  #15 Assistant Captain Holden Spence got assists from fellow Assistant Captain #8 Reid Conn and Captain #20 David Klee to give Foothills a 1-0 lead on the power play.

#15 Holden Spence makes it 1-0 with the first goal of the championship game and his third goal in a row for the Foothills Flyers

That lead would be short lived, however, when Littleton's #2 Ryan Kayser found teammate #15 Kristopher Apple-Duncan in front of the net and he was able to jam one past the Flyers goalie to tie it up at 1-1 just over four minutes later.

The third period would play right into the strengths of the Foothills Flyers.  Their ability to move the puck and find teammates with a scoring chance would prove to be the difference in the game.  The Flyers were able to draw a penalty with five minutes remaining, and that would be all the opportunity they would need.  Four seconds later the Flyers' #8 Reid Conn (1G, 1A) would bury the game winner off of the face off to propel Foothills to a 2-1 victory and send them to Quebec City.

As always, another big salute and stick tap to the Colorado Avalanche and all of the teams, players, coaches, parents, and volunteers who made the 2016 Quebec Qualifier such a great success.  Congratulations and good luck to the Foothills Flyers in Quebec City!

Tournament Player Spotlight

The Foothills Flyers were a fun team to watch with a high-powered offensive attack and several great players.  We would like to spotlight Assistant Captain #8 Reid Conn as one of the top performers of the 2016 Quebec Qualifier.  Reid was a catalyst for his team's success, posting five points (4G, 1A) in the tournament and (1G, 1A) in the championship game, including the game winning goal with just under five minutes remaining.
